Started in 2001, the Dot NAME gTLD is the single TLD intended for personal web pages only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are popular by. At the beginning, only 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to buy john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already taken third-level domain names remained online.
