When the .NET generic domain was initially launched in 1985, along with the first domains on the World Wide Web, it was supposed to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure companies. Since there were no special restrictions about the usage of the TLD, though, dot NET domains were reserved and used for diverse purposes and by many people. This extension is a good alternative to .COM, especially if the desired domain with the latter extension is not free for registration.

You can easily update the WHOIS contact information of the domain through your Control Panel tool, or, if you don’t want this information to be public at all, you can get a Whois Privacy Protection service, so nobody will be able to obtain your actual contact info.
